Services Offered by Senior Services Of Island County
"Never lose sight of the fact that old age needs so little…but needs that little so much."
~ Margaret Wilbur
The later years of life treat each person differently. For some, health remains good, enabling them to participate in life fully and independently. Others are not so fortunate. Their lives tell a different, more fragile story.
SSIC serves as a hub and clearinghouse for information relative to seniors. We offer a wide range of services and invite you to explore this site thoroughly to become familiar with them. Here’s a brief overview of some of the main services:
Senior Information & Assistance/Case Management:
This is the front door to many other services. Its primary focus is to help link people age 60+ and their families with the services and information they need to continue independent living. Case Management services are provided for low income seniors and adults with disabilities.
Nutrition Program: Serves site-prepared meals at seven locations on Whidbey and Camano Islands.
The Nutrition Program provides:
- Meals on Wheels (MOW) - delivers hot and frozen meals to homebound senior
- Liquid Nutrition (liquid nutritional products, i.e., Ensure)
- A Registered Dietitian for nutritional counseling and assistance.
Medical Transportation (CHORE): Coordinates a corps of volunteers providing assistance to older adults and people with disabilities to help them remain independent in their own homes by providing essential transportation and other forms of support.
Adult Day Services: Provides social interaction and activities for people challenged by poor health, physical disabilities, memory loss or confusion. Provides respite, workshops and support for caregivers. Programs available on South Whidbey Island and in Oak Harbor.
SHIBA: Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors program provides counseling to county citizens 18 years and older needing health care/insurance related information, including providing assistance with Medicare Part D-Prescription Medication Benefits.
Housing: SSIC owns and operates Cam Bey apartments, a HUD subsidized, 50-unit apartment complex for seniors and disabled adults. If your need is for homecare, assisted living or long-term care, we’re here to advise and help you.
Personal Care Services: We offer regular foot clinics and blood pressure screenings. We also keep a Job Bank, which lists names of people with a wide variety of useful skills that can help you do almost anything. Just ask for what you need!
Professional Assistance: Another way we advocate for seniors is by offering exposure to professionals that can supply much-needed information. Those services include a notary, Social Security information, legal info, Medicaid assistance, income tax help, driving refresher courses and help with your insurance.
You can find out more about all of our services on this site, or you can download a copy of Senior Services of Island CountyGuide, our informative, bi-monthly publication. One of the handy benefits of becoming a member of SSIC is that we mail the Guide to all our members. We also make them available to Island County residents (from Coupeville to Clinton) who are over the age of 50
