Who we are | Where we come from | What we do | How to join | How to find us Who we areWe are seniors, typically 50 and over, who meet in the South Whidbey-Bayview Senior Center where services and activities are provided to enhance our well-being and independence and encourage our involvement in the community. Our many participants and volunteers form the heart of the Center. Every service and activity provides a chance for each member to have a place in our operations. We have health clinics, classes, computer lab, clubs, special events, an Adult Day Services Program, social services, and trips galore. Our open coffee, games mornings, and lunch times offer great opportunities for meeting old friends and making new ones. Our facility is handicapped accessible. The Center is on the Island Transit bus route and Para transit van transportation is available to the Center for meals and activities for those who qualify. Where we come fromThe roots of the Senior center reach back to 1972, when a group joined together to provide meal service to the Seniors of South Whidbey and the whole of Island County. In 1974 Senior Services of Island County, a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) corporation was formed to continue development of comprehensive nutrition, information, and assistance programs and case management, volunteer chore, and Medicaid transportation services. First, a central kitchen was built. Then, after a dining room was added, Seniors started to gather socially. As the need for services grew, the building grew and as the spaces to gather increased, the spectrum of activities for the gathering seniors grew. Now known as the South Whidbey (to reflect the population base it serves) - Bayview (reflecting its geographic location) Senior Center, the current building at 14594 SR 525 is bursting its seams. The building houses the Central kitchen of the Island-wide nutrition program, a congregate meal site, the Time Together Adult Day Services Program, an Information and Assistance Office, and the multipurpose rooms, which host classes and programs for Seniors of South Whidbey. The building also serves the community with meeting spaces in the evenings and weekends.
What We DoA variety of classes, activities, trips, services, and special events happen each month. The Center serves hot lunches four days a week by donation. (Take out and frozen meals are also available.) There is a Foot Clinic for toenail trimming. Blood Pressure Checks are offered each month. For the frail and disabled elderly, the Time Together Adult Day Services offers individual attention, caregiver support, and therapeutic activities. Other services include Meals on Wheels, Job Bank, Tax Assistance, AARP Defensive Driving Courses, State Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (S.H.I.B.A.), Information and Assistance, and Volunteer Chore. Our multipurpose rooms are available for private and community rental. There are many ways to find out about the programs at the Center . . .
