Senior Services of Island County Annual Meeting

Tuesday, March 11, 1 p.m.

This is your chance to find out what we’ve accomplished this past year and help make plans for the future. All are invited.

Shamrock Shindig

Friday, March 14, 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Everyone’s IRISH for the day! Wear your green and come join the merriment and music of the “wee folks”! The Fun Band will provide the music. We’ll make the fun we know how to make here at the Senior Center. Dance a jig if you like! Or make merry in the spirit of the day! See you there!

Financial Workshops for Seniors

Mondays, March 3, 10 and 17, 12:45-2:15 p.m.

A series of three workshops with Neal Brody, MBA, a financial planner and president of Senior Financial Services who has offered workshops at the Senior Center in the past. Call the Senior Center to sign up.

• March 3: Seniors and the IRS…2008 edition. There are two sets of tax rules, one for the informed, and one for the uninformed. This workshop will discuss tax saving strategies on your current income and investments.

March 10: Legal strategies for long-term care. Most senior adults are not prepared for the most significant threat to their financial security in the past century. What steps can you take today to best prepare you for this potentially devastating event?

• March 17: Conservative investing. Can you safely invest in a market environment that is bouncing around like a ping-pong ball in a windstorm? This workshop discusses techniques that go a long way towards removing the fear and guesswork out of investing.

St. Patrick’s Day Bash...the Wearin’ of the Green!

Saturday, March 15, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Harbor Tower Village, NO COST! Call the Senior Center to sign up!

Harbor Tower Village hosts its 3rd annual free corned beef, cabbage and potato meal…complete with the Celtic music of an awesome group called Thistle Dew. It’s a come-and-go affair, however they’re hopeful folks will “stick around” to enjoy the music and fun. And once again they are willing to send a van for us about 10:30 a.m. if the group interested swells to 9 or 10.

Tunes to Delight on St. Paddy’s Day!

Monday, March 17, 10:45-11:45 a.m., Fireside Room

Chuck McDonnell (of last summer’s Friday music) will give us some Irish music mixed with some old favorites. Come enjoy, dance, and stay for Aaron’s corned beef and cabbage lunch!

Spring Fling

Spring is finally here…though we Northwesterners may need to make the sun shine. So let’s dress in the colors of spring and brighten up our world. The Fun Band will bring the music. We’ll bring that budding, blossoming, blooming spirit as together we usher in and give welcome to the season of SPRING!

March Birthday Party

Harbor Tower Retirement Center of Oak Harbor will bring your birthday cake! Join us for a nutritious lunch and cake. We will sing Happy Birthday to everyone celebrating a March birthday, and they can choose a treat from the birthday box!

The Gift of Laughter

Tuesday, April 8, 10-11:30 a.m. No cost; call the Senior Center to sign up.

Come share the gift of laughter where you will learn to use laughing to improve your health and well-being. We will both talk about and experience firsthand these benefits. Laughter helps increase circulation, relieves stress and anxiety, and can help with depression. This will be an experience of fun and sharing joy in a group setting.

CLASSES AND GROUPS

Conversational Spanish…a new class!

Tuesdays beginning March 11, 12:30-2:30 p.m., 5-week class. Cost: $50; payment before first class. Call the Senior Center to sign up.

Do you want to stimulate your brain and your memory? Learn another language and have fun while you learn. It’s a way to be together and go to foreign countries and explore their culture. This is a great opportunity to plan for future travels to a tropical paradise. All this brought to us by native-born Cuban and recently retired teacher Juanita Morgan.

A NEW OPTION…..Connecting with Sudoku

Mondays, 11-11:45 a.m. NO COST! Call the Senior Center to sign up.   

“Brain Fitness” craze! This deceptively simple game of logic is being played all over the world…in private living rooms and on cruise ships!  It’s easy to learn, yet hard to master. If you are interested in doing this very individual “sport” in a loose social setting –– perhaps with the opportunity to cross-share a strategy or two – or try your hand at a first puzzle, consider participating in this 45-minute activity, and stay for lunch if you like! Puzzles provided.

Cosmic Senior Bowling Group

Friday, March 21 (third Fridays), 2-4 p.m., Freeland Lanes. Cost: $2.44 per game/ $2 shoe rental. Call the Senior Center to sign up. Players will meet at Freeland Lanes.

Ready to - - - - R-O-L-L - - - - - !!! A great way get active, have some fun, in the easy company of others. No leagues, no pressure. New bowler??? Haven’t bowled for years??? All skill/non-skill levels - COME ON DOWN! A very inexpensive way to have a good time.

Horse Camp

Mondays and Wednesdays, a 2-week course with two different sessions

April 14, 16, 21, 23, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; May 12, 14, 19, 21, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. M Bar C Ranch, 5264 Shore Meadow Road, Freeland. Cost: $200 includes 4 lessons and 4 lunches. Call the Senior Center to sign up and pick up packet. Return packet with payment by April 9t (first session), May 7 (second session).

This horse camp is perfect for the 50-plus rider of every level. One horse will be assigned to you for the course. After your lesson each day you will enjoy lunch at the ranch. Space is limited to 8.

Painting with Deon Matzen

Wednesdays, March 5, 19, 26, 1-4 p.m. Cost: $45 per 4-week course

Do you want to try something new or improve on your painting skills? This class is individualized to your ability. You can work with watercolors, oils, acrylics, colored pencils, pastels and more. Be sure to pick up your materials list when you sign up.

AARP Driver Safety Course - Two Choices

Two-day course: Wednesday and Thursday, May 21 and 22, noon-4 p.m.; one- day course: Saturday, March 15, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. or  Saturday, April 19, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost: $10 per course

Sharpen your driving skills! This class is designed for all ages. You may even reduce your auto insurance premium.

AARP Income Tax Assistance

Thursdays, March 1-April 12, 1-7 p.m.; “first come – first served.”.

AARP Tax Volunteers are ready to help YOU! For help with your federal income tax return, bring your paperwork, including last year's return, to the Center on any Thursday.

Reader’s Theatre

Calling all “hams” or “ham wannabees”! Join the Bayview Players reader’s theatre group. No lines to memorize. Remain seated if you want. Bring your enthusiasm and come explore the world of drama with Patsy Brereton. You will learn how to use your voice while using simple costumes and props. Expect fun and an opportunity to bring out your creativity while you prepare for a mini-performance to be shared with a supportive audience at the Senior Center. New participants welcome to join the first Monday of each month!

Crazy Quilters

Senior Striders
Thursdays, 9-11 a.m.
Come prepared to walk rain or shine with this dedicated walking group. You will explore Whidbey Island like never before on walks and short hikes with your enthusiastic group leader, Helen Shields. All levels welcome.
 
Experienced Tai Chi
Tuesdays, 8:45- 9:45 a.m. Cost: $24 monthly fee
If you have some previous experience with Tai Chi, come refine your practice with Dr. Karina Johnson-Werner.
 
Beginning Tai Chi (adapted/seated)
Tuesdays, 10- 11a.m. Cost: $40 per month
This class is especially for people who are overweight and want to increase their flexibility and balance, as well as mental clarity. You can also develop better balance and breathing with the help of Dr. Karina Johnson-Werner.
 

Seated/Modified Tai Chi(new)

Mondays, 10-11am.    Cost:  $40.00/month     Call the Senior Center to sign up.  Payment before first class.

Suited particularly for those with challenges such as joint problems, high blood pressure, diminished balance, weight, and/or difficulty with movements, these movements assist in keeping the brain and nervous system alive and functioning.  The slow and gentle movements of Tai Chi and Qigong have and long and proven history of being a valuable tool to create noticeable positive changes in body, mind and spirit.  This is a great opportunity to give the new year a positive spin
